The database landscape is evolving as new, scalable data stores emerge. Key value stores, large tabular stores, and document-oriented databases offer a compelling alternative to the traditional relational database. By removing joins and loosening ACID constraints, this new class of non-relational or "NoSQL" solutions gain the ability to scale horizontally. In addition, NoSQL solutions offer interesting alternatives to the traditional relational data model.

NoSQL databases offer many potential advantages to the enterprise user. A schemaless data model enables the development team to adopt the schema design to new requirements and reduce time to market. Less upfront time is required to anticipate performance requirements. Open source solutions running on commodity hardware provide an inexpensive and scalable option that may result in significant cost savings.

This presentation will introduce attendees to the key concepts required to understand and evaluate NoSQL data stores, including the CAP Theorem, consistency models, NoSQL data models, and approaches to scaling. We'll explore relevant use cases and compare and contrast the many open source NoSQL solutions, and conclude with an in-depth examination of the document-oriented database MongoDB.

Speaker: Tony Hannan

Tony recently joined 10gen and is starting off working on the Haskell and Erlang drivers for MongoDB. Previously, he was principal software engineer at CDNetworks (a content delivery network) responsible for optimal request routing, load balancing, and content allocation. Before that he did research in distributed systems and programming languages at Georgia Tech and Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. He has also worked on commercial systems at IBM and EDS. Tony received a master's degree from Cornell University and a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University, both in Computer Science.
